Our Road to the Vote

This week as part of our She Votes 2020 initiative, which helps girls realize the power of their voices and learn about the structure and role of the U.S. government, Girls Inc. is taking the opportunity to address the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. While it is important to mark the occasion, it is also crucial to address the racial disparities of this milestone. Learn more here.

Girls Inc. Teen Leaders Advocate for Change

On August 3-5, members of the Girls Inc. Teen Advocacy Council came together to participate in our virtual “fly-in” where they focused on building a sisterhood, strengthened their advocacy and leadership skills, and met with different Congressional staffers and Congresspeople to voice their opinions and advocate for different issues like racial justice, menstrual equity, and gun violence prevention. This year’s cohort represented nine U.S. states, one Canadian province, and 12 Girls Inc. affiliates. Learn more here.

Envisioning the #BlackGirlFuture

More than 70% of the girls Girls Inc. affiliates serve across the U.S. and Canada identify as girls of color, 40% of whom are Black girls. The growing outrage and protest of the systemic racism in the U.S. and police brutality and violence toward the Black community led Girls Inc. to launch #BlackGirlFuture, a network-wide social media campaign built around the disparities that impact the girls and the future we want to see for them. The campaign launched in June and was immediately embraced by our supporters and amplified by our affiliate network and partners across multiple channels. Learn more here.

Lockheed Martin Corporation's Ongoing Committment to Girls' Wellbeing

Through a partnership of seven years, Girls Inc. and Lockheed Martin Corporation invest directly in girls and their ability to create a better futureby broadening their STEM skills, creating access to inspiring role models, and providing them with hands-on opportunities to learn and succeed. Building on this comprehensive partnership, we are proud to announce that Lockheed Martin is sponsoring the production of a public-facing video that applies Girls Inc.’s knowledge of trauma-sensitive programming practices to relationships with youth. Designed to help the adults in their lives learn to support young people in trauma-sensitive ways, the video will be available on the Girls Inc. website soon, so look out for it. We are grateful for Lockheed Martin Corporation’s ongoing commitment to girls’ wellbeing, and to ensure that all youth receive the support they need to be connected, to move forward, and to thrive.
