Email from Rep. Hinson Dear Friend, In Iowa, our rural hospitals are so important to the communities they serve. They’re where families go in an emergency, where babies are born, and where seniors can get care without having to drive hours away. That’s why I've been working with Republicans and Democrats to help extend the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration Program for another five years. This program gives smaller rural hospitals more stable Medicare support so they can keep their doors open, retain staff, and continue serving Iowa families. I’ve seen firsthand how important hospitals like Grinnell Regional Medical Center are to their surrounding communities. When a mom goes into labor or a family faces a medical emergency, people need to know quality care is there for them when they need it. That’s also why I worked to help secure funding to expand GRMC’s labor and delivery unit so more families can access these services without leaving the area. Rural Iowa families should not have to worry about whether their local hospital will be there tomorrow. I’ll keep fighting to expand access to rural healthcare, take on Big Pharma and Big Health Insurance companies that are ripping you off, and work to lower prescription drug costs. Sincerely, Helping Constituents Get Answers Travel Cleared for Service Dog Just in Time! A local coach contacted my office after a Team USA Paralympian’s service dog was at risk of missing clearance to travel to Germany for an international competition. My team worked quickly to help secure the necessary certification within hours so the dog could travel in time for the meet. The athlete went on to earn a bronze medal and keep her spot on the national team for another year. Go team USA! Refunds & Military Pay: Restored! A constituent reached out after the IRS mistakenly marked him as deceased, causing both his tax refunds and military retirement pay to be frozen for months. My team worked directly with the relevant federal agencies to correct the error and secure more than $21,000 in refunds and backpay he was owed. VA Check: Delivered! A veteran reached out to my office after a payment from the VA never arrived. After months of trying to resolve the issue on his own, my team stepped in and worked with the VA to track down the problem and get the check reissued. He finally received the payment he was owed and was grateful to have the issue resolved. If you or your family need assistance with a federal agency, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team here. My office is here to serve you! Around the District with Team Hinson My team had the honor to recognize two remarkable students during commencement who have received appointments to United States Service Academies. Daniel Spooner of Newman Catholic High School, who reports to the U.S. Naval Academy next month, and Nakia Ollivierre of Waterloo West High School, who is headed to West Point! These young leaders have worked incredibly hard, and we’re proud to see them represent Iowa as they prepare to serve our country. Wishing them both the very best in this next chapter! The team then had a blast at the Waterloo Fire Department’s EMS Open House! It was great to see so many families come out and kids getting the chance to explore the trucks and equipment up close. Huge thank you to our first responders for keeping us and our neighborhoods safe! Team Hinson recently stopped by St. Luke’s Child Protection Center in Hiawatha to learn more about their work and thank their team for serving vulnerable kids in our community. You can tell every detail, from the design of calming spaces for interview rooms to the team of hardworking professionals, was decided to help kids feel safe and cared for during incredibly hard situations. We were also honored to attend the ribbon cutting for the new Sub-Zero facility in Cedar Rapids on Friday! It’s always exciting to see companies continue investing in Eastern Iowa, creating good-paying jobs, and growing opportunities for families in our community. Thank you Sub-Zero, for your part in helping make Iowa the best place to live, work, and raise a family! Lastly, they went to Traer to celebrate the opening of the new People’s Community Health Clinic – which I helped support! Access to high quality care in our rural communities is crucial for families and our seniors. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this clinic a reality.
