If there’s one thing voters in Georgia and South Carolina made clear this month, it’s this: people have not checked out. In Georgia, nearly 2 million voters cast ballots [[link removed]] in this year’s primary election. In South Carolina, early voting opened with record-breaking [[link removed]] turnout. And for many voters, the fight over redistricting and political representation was exactly what pushed them to the polls.
At a moment when so many headlines try to frame people as disconnected from democracy, these turnout numbers tell a very different story. They are proof that communities are still paying attention, people still understand what’s at stake, and voters are still willing to show up and make their voices heard. And even in the face of attacks on voting rights, unfair maps, and growing frustration with politics, communities across the South are continuing to organize, participate, and push back. Every record-breaking turnout number is a reminder that our voices still carry power — and when we act together, that power becomes impossible to ignore.
