Finally, some good news...

Dear John,

During a remarkably difficult year — one where human rights inequities have never been more starkly palpable — you could have just as easily retreated from the challenge. You could have said, “I don’t have the strength right now to fight for justice and equality.”

But you didn’t.

And because you didn’t, we have incredible human rights wins to celebrate together. I'm excited to share an update on some of our recent victories — and ongoing battles — made possible by your commitment to protecting human rights in our country and around the world. I hope you’ll take pride that you helped fuel these incredible victories and urgent campaigns.

Here’s to many more ahead.

KEY VICTORIES

Asylum-Seekers Karla* and Katherine* Are Free! Karla and her fifteen-year old daughter Katherine, who were detained by ICE for more than ten months after fleeing from Honduras and seeking asylum here, have been freed from the notorious ICE detention facility in Dilley, Texas. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought renewed urgency to Amnesty’s work advocating for the release of asylum-seekers needlessly detained in danger and with little access to basic hygiene and medical care.

Karla and Katherine’s release is due to the relentless advocacy of their lawyers and sustained pressure from activists like you. Read more »

U.S. Takes Historic Step to Protect Uyghurs in China! In a rare bi-partisan move, Congress overwhelmingly passed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act, thanks to pressure from advocates like you. It was then signed into law.

This historic legislation sets into place a reporting system requiring the U.S. government to identify individuals who have committed torture, abduction, prolonged detention, and other human rights violations against Uyghurs — a predominently Muslim ethnic minority group in China. Read more »

Human Rights Activist Nabeel Rajab Walks Free After Four Years! In June, Bahraini human rights defender and prisoner of conscience, Nabeel Rajab, was released after four years in prison.

Amnesty activists in the U.S. and around the world worked with Members of Congress to advocate on behalf of Nabeel at the highest levels of government. Read more »

FEATURED ACTION

Demand the right to peaceful protest: This month, AIUSA’s research team released a distressing new report, “The World is Watching: Mass Violations by U.S. Police of Black Lives Matter Protesters,” exposing human rights violations by U.S. law enforcement of protesters, journalists, legal observers, and medics across the country.

We are mobilizing our movement to demand an official response from government officials on the local, state, and federal levels. Act now and protect the right to protest »
