As our teachers, students, and staff across East Texas head back to school, we need to talk about a few obstacles holding students back.

I want to start off by saying the Marshall Independent School District’s plan is headed in the right direction. Their plan of in-person and virtual learning, along with daily cleaning routines and mandatory mask-wearing is what public schools need. But we still have plenty of work to do.

The first thing being access to rural high-speed internet. Louie Gohmert has been in office for over a decade and not a single thing has been done to give families high-speed internet. Some students don’t have access to virtual learning, and some parents are forced to travel for miles just to get a wi-fi hotspot for their child.

The next thing is -- students are being coerced into attending in-person learning to avoid being disqualified from joining sports and extracurricular activities -- such as football, Future Farmers of America, band, and more. This is as crooked as a barrel of fish hooks. Louie Gohmert should be speaking up for our kids.

Here’s the thing -- Texas has now surpassed 10,000 coronavirus deaths. The last thing we need is an incompetent leader like Louie left in charge of our public schools. The man can’t get out of his own way -- let alone protect our students during a crisis. We need to make sure we have a Congressman who will take charge and get the job done. Let’s do this.
