I just finished my virtual speech at our pre-Democratic National Convention event – addressing my fellow Californians about the importance of defeating Donald Trump, and fighting for critical progressive priorities after the 2020 election.
Let’s be very clear about this: Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy. His behavior is unbecoming of an American president, and his clear disrespect of our founding principles is beyond explanation. He needs to go.
It’s going to take all of us to make that happen. We need to vote, organize, volunteer, donate, and do everything in our power to ensure a Democratic victory in 2020. That is our pathway towards true economic justice in the United States.
Victory in 2020 is just the beginning. From there, we have the responsibility to display real progressive vision. Together, we can fight to ensure that no American’s healthcare is tied to their profession. Together, we can finally (after over a decade) raise the minimum wage so that working families can survive in a modern economy. Together, we can shift American foreign policy to center justice – not endless conflict.
Those are the policies that will mobilize voters who have been left out of the system: young people, working families, people of color, and so many more. With this platform, we can inspire voters to fight for a future that we can be proud of.
This is an election where we cannot afford anyone on the sidelines. Donald Trump is eroding our institutions and sabotaging Vote By Mail to help increase his chances to win. That means we need to win with a commanding majority in 2020.
