Virginia voters made their voices clear. The Court should have respected that.
Instead, the Virginia Supreme Court handed down a deeply disappointing decision that ignores the will of the voters and stretches the law to reach a political outcome. Frankly, I was shocked by how weak the reasoning was. The fact that the opinion actually quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson - “foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” - acknowledged that they could find no legal precedence to support their decision.
That is not how this is supposed to work.
At a time when voting rights are already under attack across the country, Virginians deserved better.
But this fight is not over. We will remember in November.
We will show up in overwhelming numbers and remind everyone that democracy still belongs to the people.
