As the Trump administration continues to attack our reproductive rights,
health care facilities and providers across the nation are using so-called
“refusal laws” to deny patients access to abortion care, birth control,
miscarriage management and more, based solely on their own personal beliefs—and
even when the patient’s life could be in danger.



In the last year alone, we have seen:

* Hospitals refused to provide emergency abortion care.
* Hospitals refused to provide care that transgender patients need.
* Providers have withheld critical information from patients.
* Pharmacies have refused to fill prescriptions for birth control, emergency
contraception, miscarriage management, and transition-related medications.

Patients continue to be harmed by refusals of care – some never get the care
they need, including in life-threatening situations, and many may face greater
healthcare costs as a result of refusals. These denials of care also burden the
broader health care system and weaken trust in the quality of care provided by
that system. Refusal laws not only endanger the health and safety of medically
underserved populations, but of all people.



One thing is very clear: these laws are about more than abortion. They’re
about who has power over you, who has the authority to make decisions for you,
and who is going to control your future.
