MICHIGAN WOLVES CAUSE FEW CONFLICTS

Michigan's Upper Peninsula (known as the U.P.) is home to 695 wolves, based on the latest population estimate.

The U.P. also has about 900 working farms with about 50,000 head of livestock.

Yet, in 2019, only six farms experienced a verified loss caused by wolves.  A total of five calves, two ducks and ten free-roaming chickens were lost to wolves in six events (the 10 chickens / 1 duck were lost in one event).

As of August 1, 2020,  two farms had a verified loss, each losing one calf.

Each of the producers was reimbursed the full market value of their losses.

The number of farms experiencing a conflict has been consistent over the past five years. Records also confirmed that very few of the U.P.'s wolf packs are involved with livestock conflicts.

In 2014, Michigan voters overwhelmingly said no to a recreational hunt.   But legislators ignored their voices and designated the wolf as a game animal clearing the way for the Natural Resources Commission to establish a hunting and trapping season once wolves are federally delisted.
MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
To say we are facing difficult times is an understatement.  As a 501c3, the National Wolfwatcher Coalition cannot endorse, support or oppose any candidate.

However, consider that in the past three years, more than 90 environmental rules and regulations have been gutted and many other policies will forever change the landscape of America and the habitat needed for our wildlife.

We witnessed the biggest elimination of public lands protection in America's history when Bears Ears National Monument was reduced in size by about 85% and Grand Staircase-Escalante by half.

From rollbacks of the Clean Power Plan, to removal of protections for streams and millions of acres of wetlands to repeal of rules that restrict methane leaks on public lands, to opening of our only national monument in the Atlantic Ocean to commercial fishing to the war against wolves to the weakening of the Endangered Species Act virtually every aspect of our environment is under assault.  Many are being challenged through litigation.

No matter how bleak it may seem, we can't give up fighting.
Whether you live in a rural or urban area, there are many things each of us can do.

Hold your local, state and federal representatives accountable. Do you know how your representative voted on issues that matter to you?  Do they align with your values and what you treasure?   Research their voting record.  Several organizations maintain an online database of voting records at the state and federal level.

Don't forget candidates running for your State Supreme.  Read past decisions to help make a decision (some, perhaps all are found online), just Google the name of the candidate.

Make your voice heard and never underestimate the power of your voice.   Together, we can make a difference by voting.
THANK YOU!
Without YOU, our loyal supporters, the National Wolfwatcher Coalition would not exist.  We are appreciative of your support throughout the past years and look forward to your continued support in the future!
