Yesterday, after weeks of Trump postmaster general Louis DeJoy's
sabotage of the US Postal Service to, by Trump's own admission, prevent
people from voting, DeJoy announced that he would postpone some—but not
all—of his attacks on the USPS until after the election.
It was a nonbinding announcement. DeJoy said nothing about reversing the
damage he had already done by, for instance, replacing mail sorters and
mailboxes. The post office is still in desperate need of funding because
of the COVID-19 crisis.
But to hear the corporate media tell it, you would think that the crisis
is over, and the election is safe.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

There are still dozens of actions DeJoy and Trump could do to
disenfranchise voters. He could tell the Postal Service to prioritize
advertising junk mail instead of ballots. He could continue to block
overtime pay. He doesn't even have to do what he promised in yesterday's
statement.
In the words of one election expert, yesterday's statement "is just
words on paper." And everyone knows what Trump's words are worth—except,
apparently, the corporate media.
As soon as DeJoy's statement came out, the media exploded with stories
about how the Trump administration was reversing course, and that the
postal service was safe. The New York Times even said that there isn't
evidence that Trump is intentionally undermining mail-in voting—after
Trump openly admitted that's exactly what he was doing!
Nothing has changed about the crisis we are in. Trump is still using
every tool at his disposal to steal the election, undermine our free and
fair elections, and stay in power through any means necessary.
It's up to Common Dreams to watchdog every move DeJoy, Trump, and the
rest of the Republicans make in the coming weeks—but it won't be cheap
or easy. We've set a goal of raising $80,000 by the end of our
