Dear friends,
My Grandma Barb was the postmistress in Palmyra and my Grandpa Bob was the rural postal carrier. They were a good team.
Their work, and the work of hundreds of thousands of United States Postal Service workers, serves as the heartbeat of American communities -- particularly in rural areas like Palmyra. I know how much farm families like mine depend on the post office to deliver letters from loved ones, Social Security checks, prescription medications, and much more.
So when I see members of our government defund and sabotage the United States Postal Service for political gain, it makes me furious. If you’re furious too, please add your name here. I’m collecting signatures from like-minded people to say that the USPS is not a political pawn: [link removed]
The November election will be the most crucial of our lifetimes, and likely a close race. Voting by mail is the safest way (for many, the only way) to cast a ballot during this pandemic. Political attacks on the post office are blatant attempts to suppress and delegitimize the vote, plain and simple.
It is insulting to the democratic process, and it’s insulting to the millions of Americans whose access to mail is discarded as collateral damage. Congress must act now.
Our representatives have an opportunity to do the right thing. They could cut their vacations short, return to the Capitol, and take real action to protect the USPS. At the very least, they could denounce these antidemocratic ploys and defend the right to a functional and apolitical postal service. But all we’re getting is silence.
Jeff Fortenberry must act. Ben Sasse must act. And if they don’t, we must act to replace them.
If you agree, please sign the open letter: I am a concerned citizen writing in defense of the United States Postal Service and the unhindered right to vote. Sign on: [link removed]
