Friend, The appliances Walmart’s using to keep things cool are warming the atmosphere at an alarming rate. That’s because Walmart is a laggard in moving to coolants that are better for the planet. Walmart’s thousands of stores use potent greenhouse gases called HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) as refrigerants in appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners. These gases leak out through faulty equipment and intensify the climate crisis. In fact, HFCs have 9,000 - 12,000 times the heating power of carbon dioxide. That’s why we've teamed up with our friends at Daily Kos to put more pressure on Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers and supermarkets, to take action on HFCs today. Walmart’s annual HFC emissions are the equivalent of powering nearly every household in San Francisco and make up 46 percent of its total direct emissions that warm the climate. Better management of refrigerants is identified as a critical step to fighting the climate crisis. There are a few supermarket chains, like Aldi and Target, who are leading on cutting these harmful emissions, but Walmart is not one of them. We are urging Walmart to phase out harmful HFCs, track and repair its refrigerant leaks, and commit to responsible refrigerant disposal to reduce emissions. Join us and Daily Kos by signing this petition to tell Walmart to Cool It for the climate! For people and the planet, |
