Friend,

San Diego is grieving. My heart is with the families and loved ones of those whose lives were taken at the shooting last week, and with the entire Muslim community who must now mourn another tragedy at a place of worship.

I’m grateful for the heroic and swift response of local law enforcement, and I’m especially moved by the bravery of Amin Abdullah, who sacrificed his own life to protect others. He saved many lives that day.

He was known in the community for his kindness and I was especially touched by the words of his daughter, Hawaa, who characterized her father’s legacy as someone who would want the community to stand together as one - to be kind to one another, and to recognize the humanity in everyone, regardless of their faith.

We also mourn the loss of the two other men who died, and we hold their families and loved ones in our hearts.

San Diegans, and all Americans, deserve to worship without fear.

Religious intolerance and the normalization of violence damage our democracy. There is simply no room for it in our country.

As we head into the week, I encourage all of us to practice the kindness that Amin Abdullah was known for.

May we find strength in one another and recommit ourselves to a San Diego where every person can worship, learn, and live free from fear.

With a heavy heart,

Scott Peters
