Celebrating 5 Years of SEA Change

5 years ago, the Sea Change Expedition sailed across the North Atlantic – the culmination of our global survey of plastic pollution, but are we any better today than we were then?

The tragedy of the pandemic has unleashed a flood of single-use plastics in the form of protective gloves and masks, and an exponential increase in goods delivered with throw-away packaging and materials. Protecting front-line workers is paramount, and we will get through this but the pandemic also shows us our vulnerabilities, such as overstretched supply chains and food security challenges. What world do we want to create when the economy re-emerges?

Swimming for a Cause

This October, 5 Gyres Ambassadors Devon Beebe and Tess Parkhouse, with mentorship from Hank Wise, will be swimming the Catalina Channel to raise money and awareness in support of 5 Gyres’ fight against plastic pollution. Donate to support this daring night swim here.

Clothing for Positive Change

Our new partner, prAna launched the Responsible Packaging Movement, an initiative that encourages fashion brands to join them in shifting to more sustainable packaging. prAna is planning to cut all plastic from consumer packaging by 2021 and is working on eliminating materials sourced from endangered and old-growth forests. The company will devise webinars, resource guides, roundtable discussions, and more to help other brands make changes, too.

The Smog of the Sea print is inspired by the billions of microplastics that currently circulate in our ocean. Plastic does not degrade; it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, hence these specs of color decorating the collection. 5 Gyres is bringing awareness and looking for solutions to the ongoing microplastic crisis. This print is designed to not only be a reminder of what your plastic bottles, cups or straws could one day be, but to inspire us all to eliminate single use plastic. 10% of proceeds go to 5 Gyres.
