Let's help people take the first step with engaging our democracy:
voting

At CCL, we say that the solution to climate change is democracy. The
first step, of course, is voting, and with a big election coming up,
this would be a good time to help people take that first step in a
nonpartisan way.

This month's action sheet offers three ways volunteers can help people
participate.

Volunteer with Environmental Voter Project

, a nonpartisan organization that identifies non-voting
environmentalists and encourages them to cast their ballot.

Work with Rock the Vote

this fall to encourage students to vote.

Call or text voters in your own state by working with a nonpartisan
organization like the League of Women Voters

.

You'll find more details about these suggested actions in the August
Action Sheet.

Ceres brings business clout to advocacy: Weeks before CCL lobbied
congressional offices in June, the sustainability and advocacy nonprofit
Ceres organized lobby meetings with more than 300 representatives from
the business community. Their ability to bring that kind of clout to
carbon-pricing advocacy makes them a valuable ally for CCL. Read more in

Media generated for Growing Climate Solutions Act: CCL volunteers are
working hard to create momentum for the bipartisan Growing Climate
Solutions Act, which would help farmers become part of the solution to
climate change. Volunteers have gotten a dozen op-eds about the
legislation published so far, like this one in Grand Junction's Daily
Sentinel

Lobbying: Zooming on the road

In a time of social distancing, CCL volunteers have found creative ways
to connect with their members of Congress. In New Jersey, 62 volunteers
got on a Zoom call with Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) while the congressman
was on the road recharging his electric vehicle. An early cosponsor of
the Energy Innovation Act, Malinowski spoke about the need to create
bipartisan support by getting corporate voices to speak out for carbon
fee and dividend. He also stressed the need to link the current
coronavirus crisis to climate change: Both disasters are made worse by
failure to follow the science and failure to be proactive.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the " five levers

[link removed]

" of political will in their communities. If you'd like to learn more
about how to pull the lobbying lever like these volunteers did, watch or
read this training on the Transformative Power of Citizen Advocacy.

Training topics

CCL offers two ongoing learning series: Citizens' Climate University for
existing volunteers, and Core Volunteer Training for new volunteers.
Here are the next few sessions you can join:

8/20 Citizens' Climate University: Legal Pathways for Deep
Decarbonization - Congress isn't the only means to remedy climate
change. Local and state level governments can have an impact, too, by
implementing model policies. Join this session with Michael Gerrard
(shown above) to hear about the "legal playbook" for deep
decarbonization in the United States, which identifies well over 1,000
model laws based on two reports by the Deep Decarbonization Pathways
Project (DDPP). Gerrard is the Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional
Practice at Columbia Law School and a member of CCL's advisory board .
