Congress has yet to pass another relief bill, and as a result, state and local officials are left to deal with the rising costs holding a presidential election during this pandemic.
Friends,
The coronavirus crisis is still in full swing, not only due to the number of cases in many regions that are continuing to increase, but the financial impacts are still hitting Americans hard. In order to ensure voter safety, more states have been moving to expand mail-in voting options, as they should be. But these changes come with unexpected costs, and without federal funds, preparing for the general election has been difficult on local budgets.
I made a statement for The Telegraph last week regarding the devastating effects this lack of federal relief has had on our elections here in New Mexico. NM state election regulators need an additional $6 million in federal funding to cover the costs of coronavirus impacts to conduct the general election.
