** Back in 1936…
------------------------------------------------------------
On the 26th May 1936, the story of National Parks began. In the face of industrialisation and the growth of urban settlements during the early 20th century, a group of dedicated outdoor enthusiasts came together to create the Standing Committee on National Parks - now Campaign for National Parks.

Our founders goal was clear, to ensure that some of the most precious parts of our countryside were preserved for everyone to access and enjoy. Thanks to their efforts, the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949 was passed and we’ve been campaigning for National Parks ever since.

** 90 years of campaigning
------------------------------------------------------------

For the last 90 years we’ve helped shape the National Parks landscape. A few highlights include:
* 1949: The passing of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 which enabled the designation of National Parks.
* 1951: The first four National Parks in England and Wales were designated.
* 1968: The Countryside Act was passed.
* 1995: National Park Authorities became independent authorities.
* 2009: After 30 years of campaigning, plans to build the A628 Mottram Tintwistle bypass in the Peak District were withdrawn.
* 2016: Our Mosaic project helps over 30,000 people visited a National Park, many for the first time.
* 2024: Our flagship Health Check Report set out the first assessment of and recommendations for nature recovery in National Parks in England and Wales.

Today we are the National Park experts and bring together a campaigning collective of over 40 organisations indirectly representing over four million people, and individuals from all walks of life, united in a common cause.

** The voice of National Parks today
------------------------------------------------------------

We take our role seriously as the only National Park charity free from Government influence. We know if we don’t speak out for National Parks and put pressure on decision makers, National Parks will be drowned out and chipped away at.

As a group of 10 National Parks enthusiasts and experts, and proud champions of social and environmental justice, we refuse to let that happen. With National Parks at the heart of everything we do, we are here to unite, inspire and empower everyone to take action for National Parks.

Will you join the National Park movement by becoming a Friend of National Parks?
