After seeing tremendous success in the Senate, SB 899 is no longer moving forward in the Assembly this legislative session. It was a long and well-fought journey and we are thankful for the support that this bill, which would have made building 100% affordable housing easier, faster, and cheaper on land owned by faith-based institutions and non-profit colleges, received from our members, faith leaders, and other supporters statewide.

Throughout the process we were able to grow and strengthen our coalition, creating new relationships with faith leaders, strengthening existing partnerships, and mobilizing new supporters with our advocacy. We look forward to coming back even stronger for next legislative session as we continue our work to create our more equitable future where all of our Bay Area residents have a stable place to call home. Stay tuned for an announcement about our next Legislative Issues Committee meeting where we will debrief this legislative session and discuss next steps.

Housing continues to be one of the most critical tools we have to address public health, flatten the curve, and eliminate the disparities that COVID has so clearly exposed. In the New York Times, Conor Dougherty highlights the increase in evictions with federal rental protections and relief running out on August 1. With affordable housing legislation facing political headwinds, statewide advocates The California Housing Consortium (CHC) and Housing California urge legislators to refocus on immediate, urgent housing issues related to COVID-19 and renter protections in a recent press release. Both organizations are "deeply concerned by the significant number of proposals to expand access to affordable housing that have failed to advance through the Legislature."

NPH also published a piece that offers an overview of the HEROES Act and House Resolution 2, critical federal policy proposals that could offer badly-needed housing protections and relief that are still awaiting action in the US Senate.
