Dear John,

Wilding pines are a blight on our landscape, and we are serious about tackling the scourge.

Over two million hectares of New Zealand are infested with wilding pines, and untreated areas are expanding by around five per cent every year.

They strangle our productive farmland, suck up huge amounts of water and significantly increase the risk of destructive wildfires.

We have listened to our farmers and are turbocharging the eradication of wilding pines.

Today we announced that we are investing an additional $79 million over the next three years, taking the total commitment to $109 million, so we can ramp up control work and get ahead of the spread.

This is an investment in rural productivity.

National supports rural New Zealand by fixing the basics and building the future.
