Dear Friend, Black giving is magic. I love this message from our friends at the Young, Black & Giving Back Institute, because it speaks to the power within our own community to make change. The Institute is once again running its special Give 8/28 Day, an important moment in Black Philanthropy Month to promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits across the country on August 28th. We are proud to be among those nonprofits, and hope you can make a gift to the National Urban League on or before the 28th of this month. I know I can count on generous friends like you, and for that I am grateful. As an additional note, August 28th is deeply steeped in historical significance: - On August 28, 1955 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by three white men, which became a flashpoint in the civil rights movement.
- On August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C.
- On August 28, 2008 then-Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black man to ever win the nomination and bid for the presidency.
- This year, we plan to make history as thousands convene on August 28, 2020 for a virtual March on Washington - a day of action dedicated to our commitment to police and justice reform.
As you can see, 8/28 packs a lot of meaning and presents a significant opportunity to make positive change for Black Americans across our nation. If you have the chance to participate in the historic march, please do so. And if you are able to make a gift to support the critical work of the National Urban League, you will have my profound gratitude. Sincerely, Marc H. Morial President and Chief Executive Officer |
