Rolling Over People

What to Know: Californians were told to prepare for rolling blackouts this week as weather puts a strain on the state’s power infrastructure.

The TPPF Take: California’s blackouts are the result of Sen. Kamala Harris’ favored energy policies.

“Wind and solar aren’t keeping up, yet Harris’ environmental allies say that older gas-powered plants need to stay offline due to the environmental harm they cause to fish and sea lions,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Yet people are in danger here. California’s last big heat wave, in 2006 before the environmental policies really took hold, resulted in some 140 deaths—with no rolling blackouts. For Harris and the environmental left, fish are for saving and people are for frying."

Defending the Police

What to Know: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen said on Tuesday that cities defunding their police departments shouldn’t be allowed to raise taxes. And they’ll introduce legislation in the upcoming Session to make it so.

The TPPF Take: The Texas Public Policy Foundation unequivocally supports the goal of the “Big 3” to ensure that public safety is adequately funded for all Texans, regardless of affluence or location.

“Their proposal is in the vein of a central conservative truth: that one of government’s few foundational responsibilities is to be the guarantor of individual rights; of personal liberty,” says TPPF’s Derek Cohen. “That cannot happen within a vacuum.”

The Broken Promises of Obamacare

What to Know: In an interview in the Texas Business Daily, TPPF’s David Balat outlines the broken promises of the Affordable Care Act.

The TPPF Take: The failed experiment of the ACA has impacted all Americans.

“The ACA has failed to meet many of its stated goals and in fact has exacerbated problems that were prevalent before the law was passed,” David explains. “According to the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) recently released plan, ‘The ACA has limited choice for many, forced Americans into unaffordable plans, and provided narrow networks, which prevent patients from accessing the doctors and hospitals they need.’”
