As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary
In my monthly Prayer Alert, I try to pull back from daily political activities and look at the bigger picture, the overarching context in which daily events in Washington unfold. It’s easy to get mired in each day’s back and forth of political attacks, legislative wins and losses, personalities, etc. Having lived in the Washington, D.C., area for over 50 years, I find this to be a healthy exercise . . . and good for the blood pressure, too!
Once in a while, something refreshing, out of the ordinary and downright encouraging happens here. When it does, it is a breath of fresh air, a balm for the weary soul. That was the case this past Sunday at the Rededicate 250 event on the National Mall.
Gary and I were privileged to sit in the second row to experience this unique event. I don’t use that verb “experience” lightly. We were not there to watch but to sing, pray, listen and absorb the words, music and messages of the day. This felt like a kick-off to the nation’s celebration of its founding with the historically accurate focus on the Founders’ dependence on the Almighty in the tumultuous days that lay before them.
The early colonists already had a can-do spirit. After all, they or their forbears had left the motherland for a New World. But the idea of breaking from England and declaring independence was both exhilarating and frightening. Of course, they had no idea of the true magnitude of their choices and the positive impact their young country would eventually have on the world.
A few observations really struck me. The crowd was enormous and spanned the age spectrum. Attendees happily waited for hours to get through security. There were young moms and dads with babies and toddlers in tow. There were church groups decked out in patriotic colors. There were older folks in wheelchairs or using walkers. It was an ethnically diverse crowd of Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans.
Emotions ranged from joyful to prayerful to spirit-filled to somber. The spirit of unity and thankfulness for our nation and its proud history guided by a loving God ran through all the music, prayers and speakers. A brutally hot day did not lessen the positive vibes that were on display everywhere.
To be there and to experience it all first-hand gave us great hope. To see the commitment it took to get there and participate, no matter the obstacles of the crowd and the heat, was inspiring and uplifting. Washington still has surprises!
Heavenly Father, we come to You with grateful hearts to thank You for Your guidance and protection of our country. Our forefathers called out to You in humility when the future was unclear. They sought Your protection and guidance, and You were there among them, guiding their words and steps as a new nation was birthed. They were unapologetic in their dependence on You, and You acknowledged their faith by orchestrating events and outcomes that could only be explained by the hand of Providence.
Lord, rekindle in us that same dependence on You today. We need You but too often think we are in control. Thank You for drawing us to services, events, writings and movies that illustrate Your hand at work in our founding. Embed these in us and prompt us to share with others Your remarkable role in our country’s history.
With Memorial Day Weekend comes what feels like the official kick-off of summer. The school year is coming to an end, pools are opening, day camps and family activities are on the horizon, and parents are looking at hours upon hours of summer days that need to be filled with activities for school-age children.
Let's take this unique summer and encourage the young ones in our lives to focus on the nation’s miraculous founding through movies, books, activities, displays, television shows and all manner of 250th birthday focus. And let’s do so with gusto. Pass it on!
Dear Lord, we are a special nation whose early visionaries sought Your guidance and will. Prompt us to enthusiastically share our love of country with the young ones in our midst. Some may have a distorted view of America from teaching in school.
Challenge us to be willing to prompt discussions that tell the rest of the story. Challenge us and guide us as we weave Your story into our nation’s history.
Gary and I wish you an enjoyable weekend
and a meaningful Memorial Day!
