[Surfers Against Sewage logo <[link removed]>] Hi
John , It’s May - our fave time of year. The days are long. ☀️ We’re riding high off the back of last weekend’s Paddle-Out Protests. And it’s officially the start of the bathing season (yep, apparently the government thinks we only go in the water in summer). 🙃 Check out all this good stuff ⬇️ 📷 [Paddle-Out Protests <[link removed]>] dominating the news 🤝 [Our meeting <[link removed]>] with the government on Wednesday 📢 BIG win: [13 new bathing waters announced <[link removed]>] ✊ Plus how you can support all this by [becoming a member <[link removed]>] Paddle-Out Protests in the spotlight [News stories about the Paddle-Outs <[link removed]>] Thousands of people across the UK came together at the Paddle-Out Protests on Saturday, including 29 MPs (over 50% of locations had political engagement!) If you were one of them, you’ve helped us generate huge national media attention and galvanise our community ahead of the battle for the Clean Water Bill, firing a warning shot to government. 💥 Thank you! [See highlights from the day <[link removed]>] We took your voices to government On Wednesday, we met with the Secretary of State for the Environment, Emma Reynolds, and the Minister for Water, Emma Hardy. Reuben Santer joined us (you might recognise his story if you've watched [Dirty Business <[link removed]>] on Channel 4) to speak about the impact sewage pollution has on human health. We brought more evidence - thousands of sickness reports, and over [270,000 petition signatures <[link removed]>] demanding the government remove the profit-motive underpinning the failure of the water system. Here’s what happened... [Video still of Reuben and Louise in London <[link removed]>] A big win for our wild waters Last Friday, the government announced [13 new bathing waters in England <[link removed]>] . 🎉 Getting a spot designated as a bathing water is no mean feat and takes a formal application process to gain the important status. So we’re stoked for the communities who fought for the waters they love to become official bathing waters. Having worked with nine of the communities who got designation, we know the efforts it took. [Read more <[link removed]>] [River Dee water users celebrating <[link removed]>] How could your swim spot benefit from bathing water status? 🧪 Your swim spot will get regularly tested during the bathing season for bacteria that makes us sick. 🌊 You and your community will receive information and data on the water quality and pollution issues. ✊ If water quality is poor polluters are legally required to clean up your river, beach or lake. It’s a lever and a tangible way to speak up for your waterways. Sadly, having a bathing water designated doesn’t mean the water is clean or monitored year-round. But if a designated spot is repeatedly “poor” or “sufficient”, it means we can hold government agencies and polluters to account to clean it up. And we’ve got the evidence.
