Dear Friend,

We are pleased to announce the launch of CARS Connect <[link removed]>, a new cloud-based drunk driving prevention and mental health assessment tool that reflects Responsibility.org’s longstanding commitment to eliminating impaired driving and supporting those at risk.

Ourunderstanding about the relationship between mental health and alcohol misuse continues to grow, and we remain concerned about this as it relates to repeat drunk driving offenders—45% of whom qualified for a major mental health disorder.Weprioritize educating and advocating for screening, assessment, and treatment. Understanding these underlying issues is a critical first step toward reducing repeat instances of impaired driving and improving the likelihood of rehabilitation.

For more than 15 years, Responsibility.org has dedicated its voice to this issue by underwriting the work of the Cambridge Health Alliance Division on Addiction, a Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital, to create and maintain a computerized mental health assessment tool known as CARS, the Computerized Assessment and Referral System. This transformational tool identifies risk factors and mental health challenges in individuals and connects them with appropriate treatment to prevent them from repeating the act of drunk driving.

CARS Connect <[link removed]> builds on that foundation. This updated, user-friendly, cloud-based system expands access to comprehensive screening and assessment for mental health disorders, alcohol dependence, and drug dependence. It also provides personalized, localized referrals, making it easier for practitioners across the criminal justice and healthcare systems to intervene early and effectively. It moves us closer to our long-term goal of bringing comprehensive assessment “from bench to bedside,” enabling probation officers, courts, and medical professionals to use evidence-based tools that will prevent the number of lives lost. When mental health concerns are addressed and treated, DUI recidivism (repeat drunk driving) rates decline.

No one should have to share the road with a drunk driver, and individuals who have both a history of drunk and impaired driving and mental health challenges deserve access to the tools that can change their trajectory.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to preventing drunk and impaired driving and supporting healthier, safer communities.
