In this past Saturday’s elections Louisiana voters delivered a shocking defeat to MAGA in what used to be their own backyard.

Voters defeated all five of the statewide amendments being pushed by our MAGA governor by over 20% of the vote.

And in the US Senate race, the Louisiana Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate, Jamie Davis, advanced into the runoff where he is expected to have a good shot at beating the GOP candidate in the general election this November.

This was the first election since the rollback of the legislation that ended Jim Crow, the Voting Rights Act, and voters made themselves heard:

One post-election breakdown confirmed that Black voters showed up in force during Saturday’s contest. In a historic shift, Black voters constituted 34% of the primary electorate—soaring from a mere 25% in 2023—even though they represent just 31.8% of the state’s registered voters.

When interviewed about Saturday’s results, renowned Democratic political operative James Carville stated “we have a fighting chance” to win back Louisiana’s US Senate seat and to put that race “on the watch list.”

Adding weight to our win is the fact that voters faced unprecedented disinformation (while the GOP only canceled our House races, many were led to believe that all elections had been canceled) as well as extreme voter suppression from the GOP — on election day our voter suppression hotline received 1000+ calls from voters.

While we came out on top this time, this is a wakeup call that we desperately need to make a sizable investment in poll watchers and in our precinct organizing program.

We have 5 months and 1 week until the General Election to build on this momentum. We need to register new voters, hire precinct organizers and poll watchers, and scale our infrastructure.
