AJC Shabbat Table Graphic

AJC Shabbat Table

This week, in AJC’s Shabbat Table, we discuss why we recite Birkat HaChodesh, or the Blessing of the New Month, which leads us to reflect on the Jewish month that has passed and think about our hopes and wishes for the month to come. We also provide some tools for discussing the difference between antisemitic conspiracy theories and legitimate criticism of billionaire Jewish philanthropist George Soros, who turned 90 this week. And lastly, we review some key moments in Jewish history, including the lynching of Leo Frank, the Swiss ban on Jewish ritual slaughter, and the birthday of former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, a transformational leader for the Jewish state. AJC’s Role in Bringing Israel and the UAE Closer Together
AJC Global Voice / 2-minute read
The historic news that the United Arab Emirates will become the third Arab country to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel didn’t come as a surprise to AJC Chief Policy and Political Affairs Officer Jason Isaacson. He’s been taking delegations to the Arabian Gulf for more than a quarter century to “open doors and open minds about the prospects of relations and cooperation with Israel.” In May, UAE Ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh appeared in a rare public dialogue with Isaacson that included a discussion of Israel’s place in the region. A month later, at AJC Virtual Global Forum 2020, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash said international cooperation to confront the pandemic opened opportunities to de-escalate tensions and resolve conflicts through diplomacy. AJC welcomed Thursday’s announcement. “This is an electrifying moment, said AJC CEO David Harris. “Its importance for the entire region cannot be overstated.” AJC tweeted: “Having engaged with states in the Arabian Gulf and throughout the Arab world for decades, we hope this opens the door to further agreements between Israel and her Arab neighbors.” Read more

5 Jewish Things to Know About Kamala Harris
JTA / 2-minute read
From her in-laws to Israel, presumptive Democratic candidate for vice president Senator Kamala Harris is no stranger to the Jewish community and its priorities. She married her Jewish husband Douglas Emhoff in 2014. As San Francisco District Attorney, Harris created a hate crimes unit and, as California’s attorney general, made fighting hate crimes a priority. In 2019, she addressed the AJC Global Forum via video, expressing her strong support for Israel and her dedication to combating antisemitism. She supports a two-state solution and opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Listen to JTA’s Washington Bureau Chief Ron Kampeas discuss former Vice President Biden’s selection of Harris as his running mate on People of the Pod. Cannon Atoning for Antisemitic Remarks
The Times of Israel / 2-minute read
In his first appearance on a Jewish program, Nick Cannon told an AJC Advocacy Anywhere audience this week that he didn’t mind being “the sacrificial lamb as a member of the entertainment community” to bring America’s Black and Jewish communities closer together. In a one-hour conversation with AJC Director of Interreligious and Intergroup Relations Rabbi Noam Marans, Cannon repeated his apology for the blatantly antisemitic language he used nearly a month ago on his podcast, “Cannon’s Class.” He added that the apology was just the first step in making amends and credited AJC’s Translate Hate glossary with opening his eyes about the prevalence of antisemitic tropes. Regarding comments he made about centralized banking and Rothschilds, Cannon said “I thought I was speaking facts. I did not understand this was taken as the kind of propaganda that led to the Holocaust.” The program drew headlines around the world. Watch the conversation with Cannon on Advocacy Anywhere. AJC Releases Arabic Video on Jewish Ties to Jerusalem
AJC Arabic / 2-minute read
AJC this week released an Arabic-language video about the Jewish connection to Jerusalem, part of the organization’s highly successful Arabic video series, ‘An al-Yahud (“About the Jews”). The animated short film presents the long history of Jerusalem and the city’s centrality to Judaism and the Jewish people, from biblical times to the present day. In addition to exploring the place of Jerusalem in Jewish tradition and religious practice, the video charts the continuous Jewish presence in the city for more than two millennia. A review of the city’s tumultuous status in the twentieth century concludes with an expression of hope that Jerusalem—which is sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews—will soon earn one of its biblical names, “the City of Peace.” The Arabic video series has reached tens of millions throughout the Arab world since launching just six months ago. An English-language version of the latest video has also been released. Read more

Facebook Announces New Policy Combating Anti-Jewish Stereotypes
The Forward / 3-minute read
Facebook’s community standards now officially ban content that references “Jewish people running the world or controlling major institutions such as media networks, the economy or the government.” The newly unacceptable tropes join other stereotypes that the social media giant had already tagged as hate speech: posts that compare Jews to rats, or depict Black people with farm equipment, or Mexican people as worms. In a statement, AJC Chief Advocacy Officer Daniel Elbaum called Facebook’s new policy “a step in the right direction and reflective of our ongoing conversations with Facebook officials in the United States, Europe, and Israel.” Watch Facebook Director of Content Policy Stakeholder Engagement Peter Stern in conversation with AJC’s U.S. Director for Combating Antisemitism Holly Huffnagle on Advocacy Anywhere. U.S., UN At Odds About Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon
Axios / 3-minute read
Unless more pressure is put on Iran and its proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah, the U.S. is threatening to veto a resolution coming before the United Nations Security Council later this month to maintain a long-term peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. The U.S. has insisted that the peacekeepers' movements be unrestricted, to make sure Hezbollah does not limit the troops’ access and effectiveness. On this week’s People of the Pod, Matthew Levitt, Director of the Reinhard program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, discusses the dire need to reform Lebanon’s political system due to the pernicious role played by Hezbollah. AJC, which has long viewed Hezbollah as a destabilizing and pernicious force in Lebanon, has called on the international community to ban the global terrorist group in its entirety and hailed Lithuania’s decision to do so this week.
