Dear John,
We are saddened and outraged by Monday’s shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, but unfortunately not surprised. Politicians who normalize acts of violence based on faith, race, immigration status, sexual and gender identity, or other attributes have emboldened those already gripped by hate. We mourn with the families of Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad, and we wish them peace and the love of a supportive community.
We also mourn with the many millions more in immigrant families who are afraid to go to houses of worship, to school, to work, and to other places where life happens. And we recommit ourselves to working for a brighter future where everyone can get the care and help they need to grow and thrive, and where all can pray, learn, work, and live in safety.

Spotlight: Comunidades Unidas
Comunidades Unidas has been serving Utah’s Latine families for more than 27 years, and access to health and social services is a central element of the organization’s mission. Comunidades Unidas used PIF information to build accessible, shareable explainer materials for families about the impact of last year’s “OBBBA” budget law on SNAP eligibility. “As a movement, we need to do better at ensuring our communities get language and culturally accessible information about policies and changes that will impact their lives,” says Marifer Rivera, Community Building Director at Comunidades Unidas. New Resource: Advocates' Checklist on Medicaid Immigrant Eligibility Changes
New guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires states to redetermine eligibility for noncitizens by October 1, 2026. This PIF Checklist [[link removed]] provides suggestions for state advocates to ensure eligible immigrants and their family members stay enrolled, and tips for those losing eligibility. It includes questions for state Medicaid agencies, information to share with people who may be cut off from Medicaid in error and people who will become ineligible for the program .

Tracker: Possible Changes to ITINs and Medicaid Funds Withheld from California
Last week, the New York Times [[link removed]] reported that the Administration is pressing the IRS to change the individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) codes to distinguish between undocumented immigrants and other people with ITINs (which include lawfully present immigrants who aren’t eligible for an SSN). This is just a reported proposal, no official action has been taken yet, but you can bookmark this tracker page for updates and resources. [[link removed]]
In addition, Vice President Vance announced that CMS will withhold $1.3 billion in Medicaid payments from California, claiming that the state has not done enough to prevent fraud. For more information, see our tracker’s updates and resources [[link removed]] page on CMS withholding funds based on fraud claims.
