One year ago last Wednesday, the Towns of Westernport and Lonaconing faced a devastating flash flood that severely impacted the towns’ infrastructure, including a library, volunteer fire department, and Westernport Elementary School.
Last week, I walked across some of the most affected areas with the Westernport Town Administrator and Finance Commissioner, and Lonaconing Mayor Jack Coburn and other city officials. I was humbled to hear more about the stories of Western Marylanders who supported one another during this challenging time and about their path to recovery.
We spoke with small business owners about their journey to rebuild, which reaffirmed my commitment to continue advocating for urgent federal funding to help our communities rebuild after natural disasters and crises.
We also reflected on the Comptroller’s Office’s role as we immediately took action last year by granting automatic tax-filing extensions and waiving penalties and interest on tax payments for affected businesses. This year, the Maryland General Assembly and Governor Wes Moore further directed $12 million to Allegany County for recovery. Maryland stepped up, but FEMA denied assistance despite over $15.8 million in flood damage.
Maryland is resilient, and we’ll continue to step up to support the most vulnerable, even when the federal government won’t.
Thank you to all the residents, small business owners, firefighters, library teams, and elected officials who continue to show up for one another each and every day. Under my watch, the Comptroller’s Office will always strive to be a great partner to all Marylanders.
My very best,
Brooke
