John,
For millions of Americans, registering to vote happens during one of life’s most ordinary errands: a trip to the DMV. But what if I told you that wasn’t always the case? Thirty-three years ago today, the National Voter Registration Act [[link removed]], also known as the “Motor Voter” law, was signed into law, transforming how people across the country register to vote. But as new barriers to the ballot box continue to emerge, protecting that progress takes all of us. Set up a recurring donation of $33 to support our work to get every eligible American registered and ready to vote. >>> [[link removed]]

Under this law, 44 states and the District of Columbia [[link removed]] are required to:
🪪 Offer voter registration at DMVs when people apply for, renew, or update their driver’s licenses.
🏛️ Provide voter registration services at public assistance agencies like Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and disability services offices.
📬 Accept and process mail-in voter registration applications using the federal voter registration form.
⏳ Allow eligible voters to register up to at least 30 days before a federal election.
📌 Ensure voter registration is accessible and provide assistance for people completing registration forms.
The National Voter Registration Act also helped pave the way for state policies that expanded access to voter registration, including automatic voter registration [[link removed]]. But even 33 years later, the conversation around voter registration — who gets access, how easy the process should be, and what barriers still exist — continues to unfold in real time.
Here’s what hasn’t changed: voting access still matters. The National Voter Registration Act was built on the idea that participating in democracy should fit into everyday life, not require people to jump through hoops just to make their voices heard. And at a moment when our voting rights continue to be challenged across the country [[link removed]], understanding how access to the ballot works is just as important now as it was in 1993.
So today, on the anniversary of the National Voter Registration Act, set up a recurring donation of $33 to help us continue educating and mobilizing voters while making the ballot box more accessible and less confusing for our communities. >>>[[link removed]]
