Dear John,

We’ve made some progress and now we need to keep pushing! Last year, the Jubilee Year, we joined with others around the world to call for urgent action on the debt crisis that’s having a devastating impact on low-income countries, and world leaders heard us.

Many have agreed that action is needed, but we need concrete steps, not just words. Please sign our petition to the Prime Minister now, and help us call for a debt system that is fair, and works for everyone.

Money is flowing out of countries that can least afford it. Funds that should be spent on essential public services is instead paying huge debts to rich foreign banks. Often the countries have paid their original debt back several times over but will never clear it because of sky-high interest.

Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla explains how a huge debt burden is affecting his country, South Sudan: “Years of instability forced our nation to borrow in order to function. Today, so much of our national resources are diverted to servicing that debt, instead of paying for healthcare, education and building peace. When debt repayment takes priority over essential services, the poorest suffer most.”

There are practical solutions, and our government has the power to make a huge difference in this crisis, especially as the UK prepares to host the G20 group of the most powerful economies next year. Please sign our petition today and strengthen our call for greater ambition and action.
