Donald Trump does it.
So does his wife.
So do his daughter and son-in-law.
So do millions of Americans.
In fact, more than 1 out of every 4 Americans voted by mail in 2018.
But Trump is nonetheless taking every chance he can get to spread blatant lies about mail-in voting.
Last week, Donald Trump openly admitted — on camera — that he is trying to sabotage the United States Postal Service in what amounts to a bureaucratic coup d’etat to remain in office.
Here’s the thing:
- Even though rival candidates and political parties, election officials, law enforcement agencies, academic researchers, think tanks, and investigative journalists are constantly on the lookout for it, examples of mail-in-voting fraud are infinitesimally rare.
- For example, Oregon has conducted presidential elections entirely by mail since 2000, sending out over 100 million ballots to residents. In all that time — 20 years — there have been only about a dozen cases of mail-in-voting fraud in the Beaver State.
- That’s 0.00001% of all votes cast. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning.
Earlier today — following nationwide public outcry — the Republican mega-donor Trump installed to run the Post Office said he would suspend the service cuts he had put in motion. But we certainly can’t count on him to stay true to his word.
We need legislation to guarantee that postal services are maintained and to provide the $25 billion the USPS needs.
In an extraordinary move, the House of Representatives has been called back into session from the August congressional recess for an emergency vote later this week on legislation to shore up the Post Office.
Tell your representative:
Vote to pass emergency legislation providing the Post Office the funding it needs so that it can keep delivering the mail throughout the coronavirus emergency and so that Americans can safely and easily vote by mail in the midst of the crisis.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
Stay safe.
