American Academy of Nursing to Induct 230 New Fellows

Congratulations to the American Academy of Nursing’s 2020 fellows. These 230 highly distinguished nurse leaders, chosen for their significant contributions to nursing and health care, represent 38 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territory of Guam, as well as 13 countries.

Campaign Representative Now a Nursing Education Academy Fellow

The National League for Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education has selected 15 new fellows—“outstanding individuals” who play a “critical role in preparing nursing school graduates to step right onto the front lines,” says the NLN president. The Campaign is proud to congratulate new fellow Maria LoGrippo, PhD, RN, NE-BC, who serves as a Campaign Outreach Advocate for a Culture of Health.

Latino Legacy Award Goes to Colorado Center Leader

Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence Board President Ruby Martinez , PhD, RXN, CNS, has earned the 2020 Latino Legacy Award from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. She was honored for her commitment to advancing health in Hispanic communities. Congratulations!

Hear Updates on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Study

As it expands its study in light of the pandemic, the National Academy of Medicine study group exploring the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 wants to hear from the public. An August 20 meeting also includes experts discussing nursing’s role in health equity, and in public health emergencies, including COVID-19.

Equity Webinar to Feature AARP Foundation, RWJF Leaders

The leaders of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP Foundation will take on interrelated challenges that America faces today in a webinar free to the public. Richard Besser, MD, and Lisa Marsh Ryerson, MS, will link health and racial justice in “On the Verge: Our Collective Destiny for Healthier and Longer Lives,” August 27 at 1 p.m. ET.

Ellen Kurtzman, PhD, RN, FAAN, has words of advice for nurses and professional nursing organizations trying to effect change through policy. Her ideas on how to influence decision-makers come from experience—as a 2018-2019 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, she worked on Capitol Hill.

COVID-19 Increases Need for New Roles for Nursing Schools 

When it comes to COVID-19, nationally, “Who is in charge?” Raising the question and suggesting an answer is Susan Swider, PhD, APHN-BC, FAAN, in a piece on the Campaign blog. The nurse researcher builds on the case made earlier this year in a paper she co-authored, Population Health and the Future of Nursing: Conclusions.

“Age-Friendly” Initiative Helps Nurses, Patients in Retail Clinics

Older adults receiving care from nurse practitioners at many of the nation’s retail clinics today benefit from a grant made in 2018. That’s when the John A. Hartford Foundation gave significant funding to a group that included the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. One innovative result: more “age-friendly” care.

Black Leader in Nursing Recounts History of Racism

Bernardine Lacey, EdD, RN, FAAN, remembers well the slights she overcame growing up as an African American in the Jim Crow South. Lacey, an American Academy of Nursing Living Legend and key supporter of the Campaign mentoring program for minorities, speaks of that and more in an oral history transcribed in the August issue of American Journal of Nursing.

Among features: leading nursing organizations seek information from nurses and offer health suggestions, while trusted health authorities tell the public how to support nurses, and stay safe.

AARP Foundation seeks to support projects that advance economic opportunity among low-income older adults, and offers two funding opportunities for eligible organizations. One initiative is for direct service projects; the other, for education, outreach, or field-building. Deadline: August 31, 5 p.m. ET.

Complete Survey to Assess APRN Practice Barriers During COVID-19

All advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are invited to participate in a 10-15 minute national survey conducted by nurse researchers from Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, and the University of Tennessee regarding the impact of COVID-19 on APRN practice, roles, and patient care. Deadline: August 31.

Participate in Testing the Board Engagement Survey

Calling all registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs): have you served for at least one year on a board of directors with fiduciary responsibilities? You may be eligible to participate in a study, approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board, to test an instrument aimed at measuring the engagement of nurses on boards. Take the survey and share this message with your RN and APRN colleagues. Deadline: December 31.
