Free Speech For People
John,
100 years ago today, the Tennessee House of Representatives made history when it approved the passage of the 19th Amendment, cementing its ratification and ensuring that no person could be denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. It was a watershed moment for women's rights in the United States, as well as the beginning of a new wave in the movement for the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
Today, women are still fighting for the right to be free of discrimination based on their gender. The Equal Rights Amendment, guaranteeing equal rights to all people regardless of sex, met the threshold for ratification when Virginia approved it in January. Yet, it still is not enshrined in the Constitution as a result of an arbitrary deadline for ratification which expired in 1982.
In February, the US House of Representatives voted to remove the ratification deadline. Now, we must call on the US Senate to act. *Call your Senators today at 202-224-3121 or 202-224-3091 (TTY) and urge them to support S.J. Res. 6 to remove the artificial deadline for ratification of the ERA and place it in the US Constitution.*
The ERA, which advances bedrock equality principles, is tied directly to our work to fulfill the promise of political equality for all. That's why we are proud to support the ERA and include it on our list of Democracy Amendments [ [link removed] ].
*Call your Senators today at 202-224-3121 or 202-224-3091 (TTY) to urge them to support S.J. Res. 6. From the suffragists of 1920, to the women's rights activists of today, political equality is sacred and must be extended to all*.
