100 years ago, women won the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment. But the question we all should be asking on this anniversary is “which women?”
It took several decades more for women of color to have that same right. And while we’ve come a long way since then, activists -- led by women of color -- have been fighting ever since to ensure women’s rights continue to include ALL women. This anniversary, we’re recognizing the women of color who have fought for the last century to make the promise of the 19th Amendment a reality for ALL women -- and we hope you’ll join us.
This Thursday, August 20th, I’m teaming up with When We All Vote, The United State of Women, and Glamour to host the When All Women Vote #CouchParty. We’ll kick-off with words from a few special guests: Glamour Editor-in-Chief Samantha Barry, actor and activist Yvette Nicole Brown, and DJ Diamond Kuts. We’ll also do a training on how to text voters using our texting tool OutVote (download it here before the event) and then get to work texting voters about using their voice at the ballot box nationwide! DJ Diamond Kuts will be playing a set exclusively for us while we text.
With voters already requesting their mail-in ballots and making plans to vote safely and securely, we’re more ready than ever to reach out to as many people as possible to empower them to get registered and make a plan to vote this fall.
We hope this will be an opportunity for you to come into community with others, and keep your spirits high. We cannot forfeit our power by failing to use it. It’s our turn to make history and take up the fight of our mothers and grandmothers. I’m ready -- are you?
