Help us keep public lands in public hands
John,

People flock to California’s Carrizo Plain National Monument to enjoy the wildflower super bloom, to hike the surrounding hills or to walk along the ever-changing landscape of Soda Lake.

But soon, the sight of an oil well and the sound of drilling could ruin public access to and enjoyment of this national monument that many call the “Serengeti of California.”

The Bureau of Land Management recently opened up land within Carrizo Plain for an oil well and pipeline project. Like Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, more public land is being sold to the highest bidder.

At a time when our public lands and connection to nature have never been more important, you’d think that our leaders would want to protect these special places. Yet, powerful politicians are working every day to convert public lands to private profit.

There’s still hope for Carrizo Plain and other public lands. But only with the support of friends like you. John, will you join with others who see the irreplaceable value of open spaces and make a gift of $35 or whatever you can afford to keep public lands in public hands?

Putting our public spaces in the hands of private companies goes against the very concept of public lands. In many cases, these special places are sold off or leased to companies that irreparably destroy archeological sites, recreational areas, and precious wildlife habitat.

That’s why, building on the defining, bipartisan victory we achieved a few weeks ago with the Great American Outdoors Act, The Trust for Public Land is working to advance the America’s Public Land Act (S. 491). This legislation will prevent the sale of public lands to private companies, unless authorized by Congress.

Your support is critical. We’re fighting for special places like Carrizo Plain piece by piece, acre by acre. But we also need to draw a line in the sand for ALL public lands. That’s why I hope you’ll make a special stand in the fight for Carrizo Plain and all public lands by making a one-time gift of $35 or whatever you can afford today.

Sincerely,
Kim Elliot Signature

P.S. Carrizo Plain and other national monuments were supposed to be protected forever. But over the past four years, “forever” seems to be written in pencil. Your support will help ensure that it will take an act of Congress to sell or lease even one inch of our national monuments or other public land to private interests. Can we count on your help today?
