The European Commission is helping WWF fund land theft, torture and abuse in the name of conservation. Will you stand with the Baka, and stop them?

We’re supporting the hundreds of Baka from the Congo rainforest who recently wrote to the European Commission to protest against the land theft and abuses they are facing in the name of a new protected area: Messok Dja.  

Despite local people's opposition to the park and horrific evidence of torture and abuse by rangers, the European Commission remains one of the main funders.

Its officials have never even visited, and though plans have been in progress since at least 2014, community consultations reportedly only began this year.

The Baka are the best guardians of their land, but they're being treated like criminals. Please help us end the abuse and land theft by emailing the European Commission today.

We’re urging them to stop financing the park and to investigate the human rights abuses taxpayer money is funding. Your support could make all the difference.

Dear Mr Manservisi,

I am very concerned by the European Commission’s involvement in the creation of Messok Dja Protected Area in the Republic of Congo, which does not have the consent of local Baka communities. 

Please listen to the Baka, who have urged the European Commission to visit them and seek their “advice and guidance” before providing more funds to the park.

The Baka are being driven from their land by armed rangers and excluded from the forests that they have nurtured and relied on for generations. The Baka’s free, prior and informed consent has not been sought, which is in violation of international law.

I also urge you to investigate the role of taxpayers’ money in funding armed guards who torture and abuse the Baka. People who live in fear of violence and persecution are in no position to give their consent.  

Without the support and consent of the local people, the park will fail. For the sake of the Baka and the forests they have protected for generations, please stop funding this fatally flawed park.
