Committee Wrap Up

Last week, my House Appropriations Committee colleagues and I held a markup to debate, amend, and advance the Fiscal Year 2027 Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) appropriations bill. As y’all know, I’ve worked hard to ensure this bill includes numerous protections for our Second Amendment freedoms, including cutting the ATF’s budget by $285 million and defunding all Biden-era gun control regulations. Thankfully, this annual spending bill passed out of Committee with these hard-fought measures still intact.

During the markup, I highlighted the FY27 CJS bill’s pro-Second Amendment wins, and I reminded my colleagues why it’s imperative that we both protect and restore Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Watch my remarks below:

Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in the House Oversight Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee’s hearing entitled “Privacy Protections & the Second Amendment: Examining ATF’s Relationship to the Tiahrt Amendment.” Since 2003, the annual CJS appropriations bill has included provisions, known as the Tiahrt Amendment, to prohibit the ATF from disclosing firearm trace data, except for legitimate law enforcement purposes. Unfortunately, the ATF has failed to uphold this protection on numerous occasions — including under the Biden Administration.

During the hearing, I asked ATF Director Cekada about the agency’s efforts to protect gun owners’ data and prevent undue discrimination against those exercising their Second Amendment rights. Check out my line of questioning below:

Rep. Clyde Applauds Lanier Parks Local Access Act in Action

As y'all may know, Hall County Parks & Leisure recently announced that it will assume the management of 11 additional recreation sites along Lake Lanier through a new partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. If you recall, the Army Corps temporarily closed numerous parks on Lanier just days ahead of Memorial Day last year due to staffing shortages. That's why I offered a simple yet effective solution to help keep Lake Lanier parks open for residents and visitors alike. My legislation, the Lanier Parks Local Access Act, incentivizes local governments to manage more recreation sites on civil works projects like Lake Lanier by providing the flexibility over user fees needed to properly maintain these sites.

Due to my hard-fought efforts, this measure was signed into law by President Trump through the appropriations process — delivering a critical win for our beloved Lake Lanier and surrounding communities. I applaud Hall County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ partnership, and I look forward to these additional recreation sites remaining open, safe, and well-maintained for years to come.

District Spotlight

Tri-State EMC recently held its annual Honors Night banquet, which recognizes the valedictorians and salutatorians from Fannin County High School, Copper Basin High School, and Hiwassee Dam High School. In partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the special event honors and awards these top students with a $1,000 scholarship to further their education. One of my phenomenal Field Representatives, Connor Land, delivered remarks at the banquet and presented each student with a Special Congressional Recognition Certificate, including Fannin County’s Madeline Schueneman and Heath Bradburn.

Congratulations, Madeline and Heath! I’m confident that both of y’all will continue making Northeast Georgia proud in your future endeavors.

Week Ahead

This week, my House colleagues and I will consider the following pieces of legislation:

H.R. 1041, the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act: This critical legislation safeguards veterans’ Second Amendment rights by barring Veterans’ Affairs from giving the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) sensitive information without due process and protecting veterans with fiduciaries.
H.R. 6047, the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefit Expansion Act: This bill increases disabled veterans’ monthly compensation by $833.33 – or $10,000 per year. Additionally, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for family members of deceased veterans would increase by 1.5% over the next two years, providing meaningful relief for over 500,000 veterans and their families for the first time in decades.
H.R. 2616, the Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act: This bill ensures parents remain central in their children’s lives by prohibiting federally funded elementary or middle schools from socially transitioning a child – such as by changing their name, pronouns, or bathroom access – without parental consent, and blocking federal funding from supporting gender ideology teachings in classrooms.
H.R. 4312, the Student Compensation & Opportunity through Rights & Endorsements (SCORE) Act: This legislation standardizes and establishes a national framework for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals to provide consistency and stability for college athletics, supporting athletic opportunities, protecting student-athletes from exploitation, clarifying that student-athletes are not employees, and ending the mass ongoing litigation threatening college sports.
