Associated Press: Justice Department announces a $1.7B fund to compensate Trump allies in a deal to drop IRS suit

Let that sink in, John. President Trump sued his own government, his own appointees negotiated with him over the outcome and now he’s taking nearly two billion taxpayer dollars to pay his allies.

While Americans are struggling with an affordability crisis, Trump plans to use taxpayer money to pay off his friends and allies—including potentially the violent insurrectionists who attacked the Capitol on January 6th to try to keep him in power.

By settling his absurd $10 billion lawsuit against his own administration, Trump and the Justice Department just engaged in the most brazen act of self-dealing in the history of the presidency, and did so quickly in order to avoid the scrutiny of the judicial process.

This settlement very likely violates the Constitution’s Domestic Emoluments Clause and it seems designed to embolden criminals.

This is an outrageous abuse of power and one of the single most corrupt acts in American history. That’s why we’ve been sounding the alarm about this case for months.

CREW filed an amicus brief asking the court to pause the case until Trump leaves office and filed inspector general complaints with the Treasury Department, the IRS and the DOJ, requesting investigations into this unprecedented situation.

We also sent records requests to the agencies to shed light on this unprecedented and likely unconstitutional settlement between the sitting president and the agencies he controls, paid for by taxpayer dollars.

Demanding ethics and accountability from an administration that clearly has no interest in policing itself is an uphill battle. But we cannot give up when Trump is only intensifying his corruption—we need to redouble our efforts.

CREW is working every day to expose and stop Trump’s conflicts of interest and profiteering, but this fight depends on supporters like you stepping up. Please, make a donation today to help CREW continue fighting Trump’s abuses of power → [[link removed] fund]
