A Note from EJ Juárez, SiX’s Executive Director on Recent Efforts to Redraw Maps

The Voting Rights Act ended Jim Crow. Now the U.S. Supreme Court and state legislatures are attacking Black political power as a front to seize illegitimate control over everyone. We’ve seen a wave of states enter redistricting sessions, not in response to public need or out of a constitutional duty, but because extremist politicians and far-right operatives want to tip the scales in their favor and discourage voters of color from participating in elections.

SiX is built for moments like this. We work at scale with state legislators across the country, connecting leaders who are facing similar attacks and helping them move together with clarity, urgency, and purpose. In this redistricting fight, that means making sure lawmakers are not isolated state by state, but are part of a broader cross-state strategy to protect representation, defend voters of color, and expose this power grab for what it is.

Preparing for Midterms Under Authoritarian Control

In January, President Trump expressed regret that he did not send the National Guard to capture voting machines after the 2020 election. Within weeks, the federal government seized control of Fulton County, Georgia’s 2020 election records. Then, in March, Steve Bannon said that deploying ICE agents to airports is “perfect training for the fall of 2026.”

States will face real threats to election security during the upcoming elections. Join SiX, Protect Democracy, and the Brennan Center for Justice for a discussion on what every state can do to prepare for midterms under threat from authoritarian actors.

Legislator Sign On for Amicus Brief Protecting Telemedicine Abortion Access

Extended Deadline: May 22, 5 pm EST

SiX is supporting state legislators planning to file an amicus brief to protect telemedicine abortion care access. The brief is part of the ongoing lawsuit, Louisiana v. FDA, which challenges access to mifepristone. If allowed to take effect, this suit would disrupt abortion and miscarriage care nationwide. So far, we have 388 state legislators from 44 states who have already signed on! We have extended the deadline to Friday, May 22 at 5pm EST.

State Legislators Building a Pro-Worker Economy

Black Farmer & Growers Lobby Day

This month, SiX brought together legislators from Michigan and Georgia to join Illinois Rep. Sonya Harper’s 4th Annual Black Farmers & Growers Lobby Day. This event brought farmers, advocates, and legislators together around equity, access, and community-rooted agriculture policy.

Visiting legislators are already thinking about how they can bring this co-governance model back to their own states. This event was a reminder of the power built when communities lead, and policy follows.
