Liz Willen Dear Reader:

With all back-to-school rituals upended by the pandemic, The Hechinger Report will be sharing stories and images of what’s happening in cities and towns large and small, across the country.

We need your help.

Since March, we’ve been reporting on the many ways ([link removed]) learning is changing and how schools and parents are responding – and coping. We’ve also looked closely ([link removed]) at how colleges and universities across the country are struggling, work that will continue all year.

As schools reopen in person or remotely, we want to share images of everything from paper packets to learning pods, from open classrooms to closed campuses. Help us document what learning looks like in this historic moment. Here’s how: Email images to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) or send them via text to 212-678-8247. We also have a Dropbox folder where you can upload the visuals ([link removed]) . As always, we love hearing from you.

Main Idea

** Schools will look radically different during a pandemic. We want to see your photos and videos of what has changed. ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
The Hechinger Report hopes to document this educational experiment by sharing photos and videos from students, parents and teachers that show how schools have been physically transformed.

👉 Help us. Share your photos. And forward our request to your colleagues and friends. Learn more ([link removed]) about our project.

** Proof Points: How deep coronavirus school budget cuts are expected to harm student achievement ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
States have already announced an average cut of 15 percent to their overall budgets, according to the Education Commission of the States, a nonprofit policy group based in Denver. Since education is the top expenditure in almost every state, the announced cuts are now trickling down to schools. A second round of deeper cuts is expected in the fall.

** TEACHER VOICE: ‘With 85 percent of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, a major concern in our district has been a lack of access to technology and the internet’ ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Between this spring and fall, one kindergarten teacher’s role has expanded to include live-streamed classes, delivering food and connecting with every family every day

** What if public schools never reopen? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
The coronavirus pandemic forced schools across the country to switch to remote learning this spring. Now administrators and politicians have to figure out how to reopen this fall with the virus still raging. The result could topple the already fragile ecosystem of schools in this country and devastate public education for years.
