Friend — A quick story for you today.
My first job as a public servant was representing my community in the Massachusetts State House.
I was honored to be elected by my neighbors, and I came into office with clear eyes, ready to reform the system where it didn’t work for regular people. That included pushing for the passage of a bill to eliminate part-time district court judgeships in Massachusetts.
According to the Harvard Crimson, “Part-time judgeships were lucrative for judges, who were allowed to maintain private law practices, and for politicians, for whom they were patronage gold mines.”
The idea of making judges work full-time for the people of Massachusetts ruffled a lot of feathers in high-up places, and the Speaker of the State House, a fellow Democrat, personally sought to kill the bill.
I organized the votes and passed it anyway. And in retaliation, I was removed from the Judiciary Committee and even had my desk moved to the hallway by the Speaker himself.
To this day I live by a simple motto: The bosses can tell me where to sit, but nobody tells me where to stand.
Right now we are ruled by a corrupt coalition of far-right authoritarians, MAGA scammers, and the billionaire bosses who bankroll them. They’re trying to use every intimidation tactic in the book to scare us away from the fight: ICE’s secret police, the DOJ’s political prosecutions, attacks on free speech and more.
But as long as I am a US Senator and a proud American, I will never back down to their threats. I will stand tall on my progressive values and fight back with every fiber of my being against the injustice, inequality, and corruption of this administration.
So let me ask you: Does Donald Trump tell you where to stand? I think I know the answer.
