The very first Social Security check was sent through the mail to Ida May Fuller, 80 years ago. Since then, millions of Americans have used the Postal Service to file for and receive benefits. Today, though most checks have been replaced by electronic payments, the Social Security Administration still relies on the USPS to mail nearly 350 million documents every year.
Like our Social Security system, Americans depend on the Postal Service. They are popular, effective, and bring all of us together. But Donald Trump is trying to destroy them both..
During the pandemic, the USPS has been a godsend for in-person services that carry risk of spreading COVID, especially for older Americans. Instead of going to the bank, you can mail your checks for deposit. And many people are getting their prescriptions mailed instead of going to the pharmacy.1 But because of the Trump administration’s intentional mismanagement of the postal service, Americans are missing doses of critical medication.
