What are young people thinking and feeling about starting the year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic after a spring of disrupted learning?

How have the nationwide uprisings in response to racial injustice, combined with the disparate effects of the pandemic, created greater urgency for addressing racism in school?

What advice can young people share with school leaders in
this unprecedented moment?

Schools and districts across the country are taking a wide range of approaches to the return to school—from starting the year virtually to beginning entirely in person. Regardless of the form that the return to school takes, the perspectives and experiences of young people can inform school, district, and community leaders’ approach to the return to school and decisions throughout this year and beyond.

In this youth townhall hosted by America’s Promise Alliance and The 74, middle and high school students from around the country will discuss considerations for reopening, whether or not they feel safe, ways that schools can provide meaningful learning in this context, and how schools can engage youth in decision-making as we begin the new school year. Youth panelists will also share their insights and advice for school leaders on how schools should provide opportunities to talk and learn about race and racism.

America’s Promise Alliance and The 74 invite you to participate in a youth townhall on Wednesday, August 26 at 2:00 PM ET to share your thoughts about the logistics of school reopening, as well as how school leaders can engage young people in decision-making once school is back in session. Additionally, given the growing national conversations about racial justice, you will also be invited to share insights and advice for school leaders on how schools should provide opportunities to talk and learn about race and racism.

Regardless of whether your school is returning in-person, virtually, or a combination, this is an important opportunity to share your insight to inform school, district, and community leaders’ decisions this year and beyond.

Please note that the event will feature pre-determined youth panelists who will lead the discussion, but we will allow for time throughout the event for any young person who is registered to share their perspective. Although there will be time for you to share your thoughts, speaking is completely optional during the event.
