The Unnecessary Toll Hike: How Washington's Reckless Spending Hits Home
.
Recently, the Daily Herald reported on an alarming proposal backed by state Democrat leaders: the largest passenger toll increase in Illinois history. This plan would raise tolls by 45 cents for passenger vehicles and impose a massive 30% hike on commercial vehicles. If approved, it would generate an additional $1 billion annually and include automatic increases tied to inflation every two years starting in 2029. This allows politicians to avoid future accountability while costs rise in the background.
But this is not just a local issue. Tying toll increases to inflation forces Illinois drivers to pay the direct penalty for the reckless, rapid federal spending championed by Congressional Democrats in Washington. When Congress overspends and drives up inflation, your daily commute gets even more expensive.
What makes this proposal so troubling is that the tollway simply does not need more money. Toll revenues have exceeded operating costs for decades, and in 2024 alone, the tollway collected a record-breaking $1.44 billion. This proposed hike is an unnecessary "cash grab" by state Democrat leaders, designed to secure labor support for a broader transit funding agreement.
It is the exact same playbook used by incumbent Sean Casten and his allies in Congress: funneling taxpayer dollars to satisfy special interests, while leaving everyday families with the bill. Furthermore, that 30% increase on commercial vehicles will inevitably be passed down to you, the consumer, through higher prices on everyday goods, acting as a broad, indirect tax on households statewide.
As your candidate for Illinois' 6th Congressional District, I strongly oppose tax and fee hikes on Illinoisans. In our state, we are regularly burdened with higher tolls and higher taxes, making it increasingly difficult for hardworking families to simply get by. Bigger bills mean bigger taxes.
.
I am running for Congress to stop incumbent Sean Casten and his party's tax hikes. In the House, I will work to curb out-of-control federal spending and stop the tax increases that crush the middle class. It is time to prioritize fiscal responsibility at every level of government and ensure that our infrastructure funding focuses on necessary improvements to roads and bridges—not on padding the pockets of special interest groups at the expense of everyday citizens.
