Welcome to A Maloney Minute — a monthly email newsletter that crams everything Carolyn’s been getting done into one quick, readable minute!

Here's what Carolyn has been up to recently:

Supporting the USPS:
Earlier this summer, Trump appointed one of his biggest donors to act as Postmaster General, as part of his plan to sabotage and take over the USPS. Since then, the Postmaster General has implemented major and detrimental changes to the operations of the Postal Service. In the Oversight Committee, Carolyn has been highlighting major concerns with the Postmaster General's new policy revisions and has continued to request strong support for USPS by Congress. Just this past week, Carolyn introduced H.R.8015 the Delivering For America Act which would prohibit the Postal Service from implementing any changes to the operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020 until after the pandemic has ended. Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the House back early from recess for an emergency vote on Carolyn's bill.CLICK HERE to watch one of her recent appearances on MSNBC and learn more about her efforts to save USPS: [[link removed]]

Highlighting Impacts of Climate Change on Health & Economy:
As an original co-sponsor on the Green New Deal and the Chairwoman of the Oversight Committee, Carolyn chaired a meeting on the urgent need to limit the detrimental impacts of the climate crisis. The experts at the hearing concluded that 4.5 million American lives can be saved in the next 50 years with the right climate action. Our failure to act will result in the needless suffering of our country’s most vulnerable, and Carolyn remains committed to highlighting the need for environmental reform.

Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census:
Carolyn has continued the fight for a fair and accurate census count — this month, she introduced the Fair and Accurate Census Act to combat Trump's decision to shorten the timeline for 2020 census operations. The legislation ensures that the Census Bureau continues it’s previous schedule for self-response and non-response operations, blocking the Trump Administration's blatant attempt to undercount our most vulnerable communities that are historically harder to count, including low-income, rural and immigrant communities. She’s also threatened to subpoena Trump administration officials if they refuse to testify. Protecting Americans’ Right to Protest:
A consumer intelligence platform, Mobilewalla, collected information on unsuspecting Black Lives Matter protesters without their knowledge, according to a June 2020 report. Joined by other members of Congress, Carolyn raised privacy and constitutional concerns by demanding answers from the company's CEO regarding their role in gathering this data and infringing upon the first amendment rights of protesters.

Strengthening Whistleblower Protections:
It is critical that government employees feel safe flagging any wrongdoing or suspicious behavior by government and elected officials. That's why Carolyn is determined to protect these whistleblowers. She joined other members of Congress to introduce the Whistleblower Protection Improvement Act and the Federal Employee Access to Information Act — bills that will protect Americans who want to expose unsavory behavior and corruption in our government by guaranteeing the use of federal transparency laws without retaliation.

Demanding Transparency on COVID-19 Relief Loans:
Alongside Rep. James E. Clyburn (Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis) and Rep. Maxine Waters (Chairwoman of the Committee on Financial Services), Carolyn requested detailed documentation from the Executive Chairman of the Eastman Kodak Company regarding suspicious activity on a $765 million federal loan for production of generic drug ingredients. As a member of both of these committees, Carolyn will continue to investigate the use of federal coronavirus loans to ensure there is no waste or fraudulent activity.

Demanding Transparency in the State Department:
Following the firing of Inspector General Stephen Linick (which was seen as a retaliation move from Secretary Mike Pompeo for Linick's investigation into Pompeo's impropriety), Stephen Akard was appointed for the role of IG. This caused a serious conflict of interest due to Akard's close work with Pompeo, and suspicious activity continued last week when Akard abruptly resigned. Carolyn is investigating these recent DOJ changes through Oversight, addressing speculation of Trump attempting to politicize the DOJ and undercut its independence.

Keeping Behavioral Health and Addiction Facilities Safe:
After an Oversight investigation into assisted living facilities during the pandemic, Carolyn worked with other members of Congress to examine how behavioral health and addiction living facilities have handled the coronavirus outbreaks in their buildings and what actions are being taken to keep residents safe. Requests were sent to the nation's largest behavioral health and addiction treatment providers, with responses requested no later than August 19. It remains a top priority to keep Americans healthy, and those in shared living facilities must be protected.

Addressing the East River Esplanade Sinkhole:
In response to concerns about a large sinkhole near the East River Esplanade, Carolyn held a meeting with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner, where she got him to agree to begin repairs in the next couple of weeks. As founder of the East River Esplanade Task Force and current co-chair, Carolyn is dedicated to protecting our city’s green spaces.
