Dear Jack:
Imagine: College professors invoking science to claim God is a myth. Government officials misusing science to restrict basic liberties. Media outlets wrongly appealing to science to silence dissent.
No, I’m not talking about the latest headlines. I’m referring to the plot of That Hideous Strength, C.S. Lewis’s thriller that was published 75 years ago this week.
Lewis’s novel was eerily prophetic. It warned that elites could hijack science in order to undermine religion, subvert democratic institutions, and censor free debate. When I re-read the novel earlier this summer, I felt I was reading about current events.
Just like in Lewis’s novel, the opponents of civilization seem all-powerful right now.
Regardless, I believe we are called to be witnesses to hope.
In Lewis’s novel, a small fellowship of men and women join together to defend the good and the true. I’d like to think of you and my colleagues at Discovery Institute as forming a similar fellowship of truth. No matter how bleak the situation may appear, we are called to testify to the reality expressed so eloquently by Pope Benedict:
We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.
With your help, we are trying to communicate this truth far and wide.
Last month, we held our yearly summer seminar for students from around the world. After the program, one participant wrote us:
A few days ago, I was sitting by a river and pondering the things I studied in the lectures... I became so emotional... I am incredibly thankful to [the] ID Seminar for widely opening my eyes to see nature through a different eye.
Opening people’s eyes to see nature in a new way—that’s what we are trying to do.
Next month, we plan to publish geneticist Michael Denton’s uplifting new book The Miracle of the Cell and release a video featuring his message “The Fitness of Nature for Mankind.” But we need additional support to bring both projects to completion:
- $50 will boost a post about Denton’s book on Facebook.
- $100 will reach 2,500 viewers with Denton’s message on YouTube.
- $600 will pay for the cover design and charts for Denton’s book.
- $1,000 will underwrite basic artwork and graphics for Denton’s video.
Will you join with us this month so we can continue to open more eyes?
Each of us can make a difference—if we work together.
Sincerely,
John G West

P.S. Those who give $150 or more will receive The Miracle of the Cell (fair market value $14) when it becomes available in mid-September. Donate by September 15 to take advantage of this offer.
