The Supreme Court recently handed down a decision that makes it
dramatically harder to challenge racial gerrymanders in federal court — a
blow to the basic idea that every vote should count equally and maps
should not be drawn to disenfranchise minority voters.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise from this Supreme Court. They are no
longer a conservative court, but a nakedly partisan one – bent on helping
Republicans electorally and giving extraordinary new powers to a deeply
immoral Republican president.

What comes next will surprise nobody. When courts remove the tools to stop
discriminatory maps, politicians will rig districts to silence whole
communities.

does this — and it’s clearly needed now more than ever.

Here’s why this matters: the Voting Rights Act has been one of the last
protections that communities had to challenge maps diluting Black, Latino,
Asian American, and Native American voting power.

I’ve fought partisan gerrymandering my entire career because fair maps
that protect all communities are the foundation of a functioning
democracy.

Without them, some votes and voters are worth more than others.
Communities lose influence in Congress, and policies that reflect real
needs — from housing to climate resilience to criminal justice reform —
get pushed aside.

That’s why we need a nationwide ban on gerrymandering. So politicians
cannot pick their voters, and voters get to pick their representatives.
