On Thursday, a 14-year-old girl in Upper Darby was killed by a firearm that had been left unsecured.
No charges have been filed as of Friday morning, but police said four children were alone in the house when they found a handgun. The teens were playing with the weapon in a bedroom when it discharged, striking the girl in the head, according to WPVI.
We’re horrified by this news, and we grieve with the families. But unfortunately, this kind of tragedy is not uncommon.
Over half of U.S. states have laws mandating that gun owners secure their firearms in a way that protects public health and safety. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is not among them .

Gun violence is the number one killer of young people in Pennsylvania, but it doesn’t have to be. Right now, our lawmakers have an opportunity to introduce, cosponsor, and pass a secure gun storage law that could drastically reduce youth firearm injuries and deaths.
When adults leave their guns accessible to children and teens, tragedies happen. A bullet is fired when friends pass around what they think is a harmless toy. A teen going through a hard time makes an impulsive and deadly decision. Yet, research shows that the majority of U.S. gun owners do not practice safe firearm storage.
