Right now, Michigan drivers are wincing as they see the number on the gas pump climb higher. Between federal tariffs and the Iran war, Michigan drivers are paying an average of $71 for a full tank of gas—close to $5 a gallon.

As governor, I can’t end a war overseas or undo bad policies at the federal level that led to higher prices, but I will do what I can to help protect consumers at the pump. Below you’ll find some consumer protection resources and information about how we’re helping to ensure Michiganders are filling up with quality, affordable gas during this time.

Gas Price Resources

There are numerous resources for Michiganders to ensure they’re filling up with quality, affordable gas.

• The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is a useful resource for staying safe at the pump. If you have concerns about fuel quality or received a short/incorrect measure, you may file a complaint online or call the motor fuels quality hotline at 800-632-3835.
• While not every price hike is illegal, the Attorney General’s Office is committed to holding bad actors who take advantage of this crisis accountable. If you suspect or have information regarding potential unfair gasoline pricing practices, please call the Attorney General’s Office at 877-765-8388 or file a gasoline price gouging complaint online.
• To find cheaper gas near you, you can use these popular tools from AAA and GasBuddy. For additional resources, call 211 or visit Michigan Association of United Ways.

Last month, I signed Executive Order 2026-4 to temporarily suspend stricter summer fuel blend requirements in eight counties representing nearly five million Michiganders, translating into savings for nearly half of all drivers in Michigan. The order increases the fuel supply available in Michigan, helping lower prices at the pump by allowing the sale of gasoline blends that are typically 10 to 20 cents cheaper per gallon.

Lowering Costs for Michiganders

One of my top priorities is lowering costs for Michiganders. Since taking office, my administration has:  

• Rolled back the retirement tax to save 500,000 households an average of $1,000 a year.   
• Quintupled the Michigan Working Families Tax Credit to give over 650,000 working families an average tax refund of more than $3,800.   
• Ended state taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security.   
• Signed a deal raising the minimum wage to $15/hour one year ahead of schedule for more than 700,000 workers and making Michigan’s earned sick time the best in the country, while providing more flexibility for small businesses.   
• Established Michigan Reconnect to offer any Michigander 25 and older tuition-free associate’s degree or skills certificate.   
• Established the Michigan Achievement Scholarship to save students thousands of dollars a year as they pursue a skills certificate, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree.   
• Expanded access to free pre-K to every four-year-old while prioritizing families who need it most so every kid can arrive at kindergarten ready to learn.   
• Signed bipartisan legislation to put money back in people’s pockets and bring down the cost of car insurance, saving drivers at least $120 per car in 2020.   
• Delivered refunds of $400 per vehicle back in the pockets of Michigan drivers.   
• Eliminated the tampon tax.   
• Announced the MI Open Account Coalition offering low or no-cost financial services, saving 120,000 eligible families an average of $3,000 a year and helping them build wealth.
