John,
This Endangered Species Day, let’s tell the Trump administration killing isn’t conservation. [link removed]
During his first term, President Donald Trump called trophy hunting “a horror show” and said he “didn't want elephants killed and stuffed [to] have the tusks brought back.” Thankfully U.S. imports of elephant trophies dwindled.
But a new Center for Biological Diversity case study reveals that the elephant trophy trade is thriving under his second administration. It issued more than 300 permits to import African elephant trophies in 2025 — in comparison to 114 imports reported in 2018 and only four in 2019.
Trophy hunters target large male elephants, removing their genes from the population. Besides being essential for breeding, these bulls play critical roles in elephant societies, especially for schooling young males.
African elephants are complex, social animals who pass down generational knowledge and depend on each other to thrive. These majestic animals belong in the wild — not on walls.
